NWA Management Blunders Again
I just can’t help myself. It’s not that I have anything against Northwest Airlines, but sometimes a news item appears that just begs for comment.
Case and point — last week, Northwest management apologized for a handbook that was given to employees that were being forced out. (I believe forced out is more accurate than “let go.” It’s not like the employees wanted to go anywhere.) Anyway, the handbook contained an article titled ”101 ways to save money” and included tips such as:
- Don’t be shy about pulling something you like out of the trash.
- Move to a less expensive place to live.
- Ask your doctor for samples of prescriptions.
- Use old newspapers for cat litter.
- Buy spare parts for your car at the junkyard.
- Search the Internet for freebies.
- Never go grocery (shopping) hungry.
- Take a date for a walk along the beach or in the woods.
At first glance, the tips seem to be callous. But do you think they were based on common industry money-saving practices? There seems to be some similarity:
- Don’t be shy about declaring bankruptcy.
- Send work to less expensive offshore facilities.
- Ask your workers for concessions.
- Buy spare parts for your airplane at the boneyard.
- Search the Internet for freebies.
- Never board your airplane hungry (you won’t get fed much).
NWA did end up apologizing to the employees. The company said in a statement, “Regrettably, this list, which included some insensitive material, was inadvertently published without being reviewed by Northwest management.”
In addition, the CEO of the company that published the 101 tips apologied to Northwest employees.

LETS ALL GO TO THE EXECUTIVES HOMES FOR HAND OUTS.
THOSE WHO ARE WORKING SHOULD GO IN THE TREMINAL AND DUMPSTER DIVE IN THE COFFEE SHOPS WITH THEiR UNIFORMS ON, AND EMBARRASS THE S**T OUT OF THEM.
Nothing would make me happier than seeing Doug Steenland reduced to having to garbage-pick. Ba$tard$, one & all!
once again Northwest(Northless) airlines has dishonered itself and its hadworking people. Incredibly thoughtless and disturbing. No wonder unions exists, with managment like this, it’s hard to imagine that Northless is the nations 4th largest airline. I will never apply for a job there, i’d rather be on the street. NWA managment and integrity are not a match. shame on you!!!
Tell NWA, 101 ways to run a profitable airline: 1. Follow Southwest 2. Follow Southwest 3. Follow Southwest. 4. I think you get the idea. NWA needs to STOP picking the employees apart, for any airline the employees are where the rubber meets the road!!
Insensitive - YES- practical YES. But come on this is not the time to counsel people on how to save money when you just pulled the carpet out from under them. What a bunch of idiots. Our industry is full of people and mangers that have about as much sensitivty as Arche Bunker.
While I wholeheartedly agree that these people do not have a clue as how to run any company properly.
We also have to admit that there are others at fault here. Namely our government is enabling this to happen. And not just the Bush Administration. Our government has allowed airline management to run roughshod over employees and customers for over 20 years. Deregulation was a great idea, but letting the airlines run with little to no oversight has been a disaster in the making. And while I would personally never work for a union, I do believe that taking money from union backed employees, or any employees for that matter, to try any cover up their incompetence should be a crime and prosecuted. But, with our government and court system being owned
by big business, this is just not going to happen.
Thanks for the comments. I just wanted to advise that because of the new blog software our interactive department has implemented, the borders (especially the left hand side) are getting cut off the further you go down the page. If you make it to the bottom, the “L” in “Leave a Comment” is missing. Also, if you type in the fields, the first letter or two on the left hand side are not visible. Please excuse these problems. We have someone looking into these bugs. Thank you, Joe Escobar
Joe, just when I thought management could not sink lower they tell people to Dumpster dive and apolagize for not editing the content. It is not to far a streatch to see management brainstorming and having a good laugh at their suggestions. Gone are the days when management cares and tried to build a company with the best mechanics / employees. Why would anyone want anything to do with this industry, They have no honor, morals and are not ethical. Anyone working for them will suffer down the road when they are let go for not working for less, Not the life that I would persue if I had it to do again. Retired Wrench from UAL
I’ve never been a fan of unions, but this is a very compelling reason for them. This is a new benchmark in airline management stupidity. It’s time for us to start using the phrase “pulled a Northwest”. As in, “that idiot forgot his landing gear and pulled a Northwest”.
I’m sure the morale of the remaining Northwest workers is at rock bottom, and those who still care about quality work are exploring other opportunities. Northworst Airlines will never benefit from my wrenches. Stupidity SHOULD hurt.
AtI worked as a Lead Technician at Northwest and was employed there for 14 years. It almost seemed as if Management’s motto for the employees was “We’re not happy until you’re not happy!”
Insensitive? NO! Telling….This is a prime example of how executives view labor. If they could have us in physical slavery, they would. As it is, they just try to have us in economic slavery. And executive perks go on, and on, and on…
I ask myself everyday how could I have worked so hard for a company that treated it’s employees in such a way. I worked foe Eastern and I thought that no person could be treated worst than we were by that snake but guess what he is alive and well living at Northworst. I got my walking papers after 9/11 when they took the opportunity to hold their hand out for EASY money saying that they couldn’t make it without help BULL !!!!!!! How can an Airline file and then turn around stating that they need to cut cost and BUY another Airline…..Doesn’t this start you to THINK???? It should and I feel that as long as people allow this to happen it will not change…Fly Southwest they are trying to treat people including those that work for them Fairly
